what to expect with skin surgery

You will have a consultation with the doctor to discuss your skin lesion. After taking a history and examining you, the options for skin surgery will be discussed with you. If you wish to proceed with surgery, the doctor will then fill out a consent form listing the pros and cons of the procedure. If you have any questions this is a good time to ask them. There is no obligation to proceed to surgery if you change your mind after the initial consultation.

You will then be booked to come back on another day for the procedure - mainly to give you time to consider your options, this is best practice. If you have the tendency to feel faint then it is advisable that you have someone to drive you to and from the appointment. However, we ask them to wait outside the operating room during the procedure itself. Most single lesions will take a maximum of 30 minutes to remove. If there are multiple lesions, then this might take longer.

On the day of the procedure, wear clothing which allows us to easily access your lesion. We will check that you have no further questions or concerns before going ahead. Usually the lesion will be marked in pen before removing and then you have a local anaesthetic injection (similar to those at a dentist). Once the area is numb you will feel the doctor touching your but no pain. We may use a hyfrecator machine (electrical cautery) to control any bleeding. This makes a buzzing noise and can smell of smoke. You will not feel anything. After the procedure is complete we will apply a dressing to the area, to be kept on for 48 hours. We will discuss with you wound care advice, and when you may need to return for removal of stitches if appropriate.

The doctor will telephone you within 2 weeks to discuss your results. Please do get in touch with us if you have not heard from us. If you have any concerns post operatively please contact us, we would be happy to help.
